妙なる楽の音のきみよ、きみはなぜもの憂げに音楽を聞く？
美しいものは美と争わず、悦びは悦びを楽しむもの
きみはなぜ喜んで受け入れられないものを愛し
うんざりさせるものを歓んで受け入れるのか？
入念に調律された正しい旋律が
協和音で結ばれているのにきみの耳に障るとすれば
それは優しくきみを叱ってのこと、きみが
負うべき役を一人で無駄にしているから。
見たまえ、一本の弦がもう一つの弦の優しい夫となり
互いに調和して鳴り響くのを
父親と、子どもと、しあわせな母親が、一体となって
一つの楽しい調べを歌うかのようではないか。
多くの音色からなり、しかも一つに聞こえる無言の歌が
きみに歌う、「ひとりのままでは何も残らない」と。

Sweets with sweets war not, joy delights in joy;
Why lov’st thou that which thou recceiv’st not gladly,
Or else receiv’st with pleasure thine annoy?
If the true concord of well-tuned sounds
By unions married, do offend thine ear,

Mark how one string, sweet husband to another,
Strikes each in each by mutual ordering,
Resembling sire, and child, and happy mother,
Who all in one, one pleasing note do sing:
Whose speechless song being many, seeming one,
Sings this to thee: ‘Thou single wilt prove none.’ |
