しっかり眼を閉じるとき、そのときこそ最もよく見える
昼の間は、眼はぼんやりとしか見えていない
だが、眠れば夢の中できみが見え
眼は、闇に輝き、闇の明かりに導かれる。

すると、きみの影が夜の暗闇を明るく照らし
きみの影の実体が、昼よりもなお明るい光に輝き
明るい昼にその姿を現わせばどれほど楽しかろう
見えない眼にさえ、こんなにもきみの影は光り輝くのだから。

わたしの眼はどれほど幸せになることだろう
昼ひる日中ひなかにきみを見ることができるなら。
真夜中にきみの美しい幻を
深い眠りの中で見えない眼が見るように。

　　きみを見るまでは昼も夜でしかなく
　　夢できみの姿を見れば、夜も昼と輝く。

When most I wink, then do mine eyes best see;
For all the day they view things unrespected,
But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee,
And darkly bright, are bright in dark directed.
Then thou whose shadow shadows doth make bright,
How would thy shadow’s form form happy show
To the clear day with thy much clearer light,
When to unseeing eyes thy shade shines so?
How would (I say) mine eyes be blessed made
By looking on thee in the living day,
When in dead night thy fair imperfect shade
Through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay?
  All days are nights to see till I see thee,
  And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me.
