わたしは星を見てものごとの判断はしない
それでも、占星術の心得はあると思っている
しかし、吉凶を告げるのでもなく
疫病、飢饉、気候の異変を占うこともしない。

時々刻々の運命を予言することもできなければ
いつ何時なんどき、雷雨や、嵐が起こるかも予言できない
また、天に現れる何らかの前兆を見出して
王公が安泰であるかどうかも告げることができない。

だが、わたしはきみの眼から知識を引き出す
きみの眼という恒星の中にわたしが読み取るのは
真実と美がともに栄える学芸
それは、きみが宗旨替えしてきみの子孫を残すこと。

　　そうしなければ、わたしは予言する
　　きみの死が真実と美の終焉であると。

Not from the stars do I my judgement pluck;
And yet, methinks, I have astronomy,
But not to tell of good or evil luck,
Of plagues, of dearths, or seasons’ quality;
Nor can I fortune to brief minutes tell,
Pointing to each his thunder, rain and wind;
Or say with princes if it shall go well
By aught predict that I in heaven find;
But from thine eyes my knowledge I derive,
And, constant stars, in them I read such art
As truth and beauty shall together thrive
If from thyself, to store thou wouldst convert:
　Or else of thee this I prognosticate,
　Thy end is truth’s and beauty’s doom and date.
