わたしの愛が偶像崇拝であるとか
わたしの愛する人が偶像であるとか言わないでくれ
わたしの唄や称賛がどれもこれも似通っていて
一人について、一つ覚えで、相も変わらぬものだからといって。

わたしの愛する人は、今日も優しく、明日も優しい
その卓越した美徳は常に変わらない
だから、わたしの詩は彼の変わらぬ優しさゆえに
ひとつのことを語るだけ、あとは無視している。

真、善、美がわたしの主題のすべて
真、善、美を他の言葉に言い換え
その言い換えにわたしの創意工夫は費やされ
三つの主題が一体となって詩想が広がるのだ。

　　真、善、美の一つがひとりの人に備わることはあっても
　　その三つが一人の人に備わったことはこれまでになかった。

Nor my beloved as an idol show,
Since all alike my songs and praises be,
To one, of one, still such, and ever so.
Kind is my love today, tomorrow kind,
Still constant in a wondrous excellence;
Therefor my verse, to constancy confined,
One thing expressing, leaves out difference.
Fair, kind and true is all my argument;
Fair, kind and true, varying to other words,
And in this change is my invention spent,
Three themes in one, which wondrous scope affords.
　Fair, kind and true have often lived alone,
　Which three, till now, never kept seat in one.
