さようなら、きみはわたしが所有するには高貴過ぎるし
きみも自分の価値を先刻承知のことだろう
きみは自由の身となるだけの特権を持っているし
きみへのわたしの債権もすっかり期限が切れている。

きみの承諾なしに、どうしてきみを拘束し
その富の権利を受ける資格など、どこにあろう。
わたしにはこの立派な贈り物を受ける理由もない
だから、わたしの特権は返上することにしよう。

自分を与えたとき、自分の値打ちが分かっていなかったか
あるいは、きみが与えたわたしのことを買い被っていたのだ
だから、誤解で生じたきみの大きな贈り物は
もっとましな判断をした上で、元の鞘に収まる。

　　こうして、きみを所有していたのは夢のようであり
　　眠りの中では王様でも、目覚めれば元の木阿弥。

Farewell, thou art too dear for my possessing,
And like enough thou knowst thy estimate;
The charter of thy worth gives thee releasing;
My bonds in thee are all determinate.
For how do I hold thee but by thy granting,
And for that riches where is my deserving?
The cause of this fair gift in me is wanting,
And so my patent back again is swerving.
Thyself thou gav’st, thy own worth then not knowing,
Or me, to whom thou gav’st it, else mistaking;
So thy great gift upon misprision growing
Comes home again, on better judgement making.
　Thus have I had thee as a dream doth flatter,
　In sleep a king, but waking no such matter.
