｢君は唯一無二｣、この最高の賛辞にまさる
称賛を言うことができるものが他にいようか
君の美に匹敵する手本が育つ宝庫は
君の囲いの中にしかない。

詩人のやせ細った筆の力では
その主題にわずかな栄光も与えることができない
しかし、君のことを書く詩人は
｢君は君である｣と書くだけで威厳がつく。

詩人は君の中に書かれたものを写すだけでいい
自然が美しくこしらえたものを悪くする必要はない
そのような複写は詩人の才能の名声を広め
その文体もいたるところで称賛されるだろう。

　　君は美貌への祝福に呪いを加えることになる
　　称賛を好むのは、君への賛美を貶おとしめることだから。

Who is it that says most? Which can say more,
Than this rich praise: that you alone are you,
In whose confine immured is the store
Which should example where your equal grew?
Lean penury within that pen doth dwell
That to his subject lends not some small glory;
But he that writes of you, if he can tell
That you are you, so dignifies his story.
Let him but copy what in you is writ,
Not making worse what nature made so clear,
And such a counterpart shall fame his wit,
Making his style admired everywhere.
　You to your beauteous blessings add a curse,
　Being fond on praise, which makes your praises worse.
