見よ、東方に王侯の太陽が
燦然と輝く頭こうべを上げる時、下界の目は
新たに現れたその姿に敬意を払い
神聖な君主として崇める。

天にも届かんばかりの険しい丘を上りつめた時も
中年となってもなお元気盛りの若者にも似ており
地上の人々はなおもその美しさを崇め
黄金に輝く巡礼の姿を見守る。

しかし、疲れ果てた日輪が絶頂の高さから
弱々しい老人のようによたよたと昼を下りだすと
それまで従順であった人々の目も、今は
その落ちぶれた姿から目をそむけ、あらぬ方を見る。

　　そのようにきみも人生の盛りを過ぎたとき
　　息子を持たなければ見る人もなく死ぬことになる。

Lo, in the Orient when the gracious light
Lifts up his burning head, each under eye
Doth homage to his new appearing sight,
Serving with looks his sacred majesty;
And having climbed the steep-up heavenly hill,
Resembling strong youth in his middle age,
Yet mortal looks adore his beauty still,
Attending on his golden pilgrimage:
But when from high-most pitch with weary car
Like feeble age he reeleth from the day,
The eyes, fore duteous, now converted are
From his low tract, and look another way:
　So thou, thyself out-going in thy noon,
　Unlooked on diest, unless thou get a son.
