ああ、彼はなぜ腐敗の世界に生きなければならないのか
彼と共にいることで悪徳も美徳に見え
それで罪悪は彼を利用して得をし
彼との交友で箔を付けるというのに。

なぜ、偽りの化粧で彼の頬をまね
生き生きした表情から死人の顔を盗みだすのか
なぜ、貧相な美は人目を欺いてまで
彼という真の薔薇がありながら、その模造品を求めるのか。

なぜ、彼は生きねばならないのか、自然の女神が破産した今
頬を染めた鮮やかな血管も血にこと欠き
自然の女神は、今や、彼のほかに財産もなく
子宝を誇ろうとも、彼の実入りに頼るのみ。

　　ああ、彼女が彼を蓄えていたのは、どんな富を持っていたか見せるため
　　昔、こんなひどい世の中になる前に。

Ah, wherefore with infection should he live,

Why should false painting imitate his cheek,
