「時」の残酷な手にかかり、見るも無残な形となって
栄華を誇った建造物が廃れ、忘却に埋もれるのを見るとき
かつて高く聳えた塔が倒壊し
永遠に保つはずの真鍮の碑が死の怒りに屈するのを見るとき

腹をすかした大海原が
王国の岸辺を侵食する一方
堅い大地がその海原を制圧し、互いに
失っては増え、増えては失うのを見るとき

このような有為転変に
栄華が破滅し、朽ち果てるのを見るとき
廃墟がわたしに「思い」を巡らせる
「時」が訪れ、わたしの愛するものを奪っていくことを。

　　この「思い」は死にも等しく
　　やがては失うことを恐れ、泣くほかはない。

When I have seen by time’s fell hand defaced
The rich proud cost of outworn buried age;
When sometime lofty towers I see down razed,
And brass eternal slave to mortal rage;
When I have seen the hungry ocean gain
Advantage on the kingdom of the shore,
And the firm soil win of the wat’ry main,
Increasing store with loss, and loss with store;
When I have seen such interchange of state,
Or state itself confounded, to decay,
Ruin hath taught me thus to ruminate:
That time will come and take my love away.
　This thought is as death, which cannot choose
　But weep to have that which it fears to lose.
