新しいものは何ひとつなく、今あるものは
かつてあったものとすれば、我々の頭脳はどこまで欺かれ
新しいものを産み出そうと苦労するのは
二番煎じの過ちを繰り返すことでしかないのか？

ああ、記憶が過去を振り返り
太陽の運行の五百年前に遡って
初めて心の思いを文字で書き記した古書に
君の姿を見出せたらと思う。

そうすれば、見事に均整の取れた君の姿形を見て
昔の人が何と言うことが出来たか
我々が進歩したか、昔の人の方が優れていたか　
あるいは同じことの繰り返しか、分かりもしよう。

　　わたしは確信している、昔の賢者たちは
　　君より劣った題材に賛辞を贈っただけだと。

If there be nothing new, but that which is
Hath been before, how are our brains beguiled,
Which, laboring for invention, bear amiss
The second burden of a former child?
O that record could with a backward look
Even of five hundred courses of the sun
Show me your image in some antique book,
Since mind at first in character was done,
That I might see what the old world could say
To this composed wonder of your frame;
Whether we are mended, or whe’er better they,
Or whether revolution be the same.
　O sure I am, the wits of former days
　To subjects worse have given admiring praise.
