君の実体は何か、君は何でできているのか
何百万という不思議な影を従えた君は？
人はみな自分の影を一つしか持たぬのに
君は一人であらゆる影を見せることができる。

アドニスを描くとも、その絵姿は
君をお粗末に似せたに過ぎない。
ヘレナの頬をあらゆる技法を駆使して描くとも
ギリシアの衣装をまとった君を新たに描くに過ぎない。

一年の春や、実りの秋にたとえれば
春は、君の美の影を見せるに過ぎず
秋は、君の恵み深い心を表わすに過ぎない。
わたしたちは、祝福されたあらゆる形の中に君を見る。

　　君は外界のすべての美において分かち合っているが
　　変わらぬ心にかけては誰とも異なり、誰も君に及ばない。

What is your substance, whereof are you made,
That millions of strange shadows on you tend?
Since every one hath every one one shade,
And you, but one can every shadow lend;
Describe Adonis, and the counterfeit
Is poorly imitated after you;
On Helen’s cheek all art of beauty set
And you in Grecian tires are painted new;
Speak of the spring, and foison of the year:
The one doth shadow of your beauty show,
The other as your bounty doth appear,
And you in every blessed shape we know.
