ほかの二つの元素、軽い空気と浄きよめの火は
わたしがどこにいようと、二つともきみと一緒にいる
その一つはわたしの「思い」、もう一つはわたしの欲望
この二つの元素は、素早い動きで、ここかと思えばもういない。

この二つの敏捷な元素が
きみへの優しい愛の使者となって出かけてしまうと
四つの元素からなるわたしの命は残った二つの元素だけとなり
黒胆汁に押し潰され、死ぬほど沈んでいる。

命の構成が回復するのは
きみのもとからその早飛脚たちが戻ったとき
彼らはたった今戻ってきて
きみが元気でいるとわたしに告げた。

　　それを聞いてわたしは喜ぶが、その喜びも束の間
　　彼らを再び使いに出し、すぐに悲しい思いをする。

The other two, slight air, and purging fire,
Are both with thee, wherever I abide:
The first my thought, the other my desire,
These, present absent, with swift motion slide;
For when these quicker elements are gone
In tender embassy of love to thee,
My life being made of four, with two alone
Sinks down to death, oppressed with melancholy,
Until life’s composition be recured
By those swift messengers returned from thee
Who even but now come back again assured
Of thy fair health, recounting it to me.
　This told, I joy; but then no longer glad,
　 I send them back again and straight grow sad.
