公けの名誉や立派な肩書を自慢させておくがよい
わたしはそのような勝利の女神から見放されてはいるが
思いがけずにも最も敬愛する人から喜びを授かっている。

偉大な君主の寵臣たちが美しい花弁を広げるのは
太陽の眼差しを受けたマリーゴールドと同じく
その輝きも己が身とともに埋もれてしまう
ひとたび不興を買えばその栄誉も失せてしまう。

戦いくさの誉れ高い歴戦の兵士も
千の勝利を得てもいったん敗れれば
名誉の記録から完全に消し去られ
苦労して得た手柄もみな忘れ去られてしまう。

　　だが、幸せなことに、わたしは愛し愛され
　　裏切ることもなければ裏切られることもない。

Let those who are in favour with their stars
Of public honour and proud titles boast,
Whilst I, whom fortune of such triumph bars,
Unlooked for joy in that I honour most;
Great princes’ favourites their fair leaves spread
But as the marigold at the sun’s eye,
And in themselves their pride lies buried,
For at a frown they in their glory die.
The painful warrior famoused for worth,
After a thousand victories once foiled,
Is from the book of honour razed quite,
