盲目の道化者、愛の神よ、わたしの眼に何ということをしてくれたのだ
眼は見ていても、何を見ているのか分かっていない
眼は美とは何か知っていて、それがあるところを見ても
最悪なものを最善であると思いこむ。

偏見で曇って堕落した眼が
男という男がみな停泊する港に錨をおろすからとて
どうしておまえは眼の過あやまちから釣針をこしらえ
わたしの心の判断をひっかけようとするのか。

どうしてわたしの心はそれを私有地と考えるのか
それが広く世間の共有地であると分かっているのに
それともわたしの眼はそれを見ていながら、それではないと言って
そのような醜い顔に美しい真実を着せるのか。

　　わたしの心と眼はこの正しい真実を見誤り
　　今はこの偽りの疫病にとり憑かれている。

Thou blind fool love, what dost thou to mine eyes,
That they behold, and see not what they see?
They know what beauty is, see where it lies,
Yet what the best is, take the worst to be.
If eyes, corrupt by over-partial looks,
Be anchored in the bay where all men ride,
Why of eyes’ falsehood hast thou forged hooks,
Whereto the judgement of my heart is tied?
Why should my heart think that a several plot
Which my heart knows the wide world’s common place?
Or mine eyes, seeing this, say this is not,
To put fair truth upon so foul a face?
  In things right true my heart and eyes have erred,
  And to this false plague are they now transferred.
