かつて黒は美のうちに入らなかった
ものの数であったとしても美の名を与えられなかった
それが今では黒が美の嫡流の相続人となり
美は私生児の汚名で汚されている。

今では誰もが自然の女神の力を奪って
技巧を凝らした借り物の顔で醜さを美しく装い
貴重な美は評判を落とし、神聖な住みかを失い
汚名を受けないまでも品位を汚されている。

それゆえに、わたしの恋人の眼が鴉のように黒く
その眼が嘆き悲しむ者のように見えるのは
美しく生まれついていない者たちが美があるかのように
作り物の美で自然の美を汚しているのを見るからだ。

　　だが、彼女の眼がその悲しみにふさわしく嘆くので
　　誰もが口をそろえて美とはそうあるべきだと言う。

In the old age black was not counted fair,
Or if it were, it bore not beauty’s name;
But now is black beauty’s successive heir,
And beauty slandered with a bastard shame:

Fairing the foul with art’s false borrowed face,
