あ、わたしのために運命の女神を叱りつけてくれ
わたしに邪まな行為をさせる罪深い女神を
彼女がわたしの暮らしの方便たつきにさせたことは
平俗を助長するだけの大衆相手の生業なりわいだった。

そのことでわたしの名前が得たのは汚名の烙印
おかげでわたしの本性もなり下がり
染物屋の手のように、自分の仕事で汚してしまった
だから、わたしを憐れみ、わたしの更生を願ってほしい

一方で、わたしは患者が進んで薬を飲むように
頑なな病を治すための苦い薬を飲むとしよう
どんなに苦い薬も苦いと思わず
罰に罰を重ねて受けようとも二重の苦役と思わない。

　　だから、大切な友よ、わたしを憐れんでほしい、きっと
　　君が憐れんでくれるだけでわたしの病を癒すのに十分だ。

O, for my sake do you with Fortune chide,
The guilty goddess of my harmful deeds,
That did not better for my life provide
Than public means, which public manners breeds;
Thence comes it that my name receives a brand,
And almost thence my nature is subdued
To what it works in, like the dyer’s hand;
Pity me, then, and wish I were renewed,
Whilst like a willing patient I will drink
Portions of eisell ’gainst my strong infection;
No bitterness that I will bitter think,
Nor double penance to correct correction.
　Pity me then, dear friend, and I assure ye,
　Even that your pity is enough to cure me.
